Henceforward WordPress Website Migration Case Study#

The Challenge#

The project started with a need to make several changes to an existing WordPress website while also improving the underlying hosting environment.

The work had to address multiple areas at the same time:

• Migrate the website to a new Scaleway infrastructure.
• Configure and manage the production environment through Laravel Forge.
• Create and integrate new website pages without disrupting the existing site.
• Improve website security and reduce unnecessary infrastructure risks.
• Optimize the WordPress installation and server configuration for better performance.
• Maintain a stable production environment throughout the migration and subsequent updates.

This made the project more than a typical WordPress update. The website needed improvements at both the application level and infrastructure level.

The Approach#

I handled the project across WordPress development, infrastructure migration, security, and performance optimization.

Infrastructure Migration#

The existing WordPress environment was migrated to Scaleway, with Laravel Forge used to manage the production server and deployment environment.

The migration involved preparing the new infrastructure, configuring the web stack, transferring the website and its associated data, and validating the production environment before directing traffic to the new setup.

Using Laravel Forge provided a structured way to manage the server, deployments, SSL, and ongoing infrastructure operations. Forge supports WordPress alongside PHP and other modern web stacks, making it suitable for managing the site's production environment.

WordPress Development#

Alongside the infrastructure work, I created and integrated new pages into the existing WordPress website.

The objective was to extend the website without introducing unnecessary complexity or compromising the existing structure. New content was incorporated into the site's established design and WordPress architecture so that the website remained consistent for visitors and manageable for the client.

Security Improvements#

Security was another important part of the project.

I reviewed the WordPress and hosting environment and implemented improvements aimed at reducing common security risks and keeping the production environment better controlled.

The work included attention to the server configuration, WordPress environment, deployment setup, and production access.

Performance Optimization#

The website and infrastructure were also optimized to improve overall performance.

The optimization work focused on reducing unnecessary overhead across the WordPress installation and production environment while ensuring that new changes did not negatively affect the existing website.

The result was a cleaner technical foundation that could support ongoing content and website updates more reliably.

Migration & Deployment#

The migration was approached as an infrastructure change rather than simply moving WordPress files from one server to another.

The process included:

1. Preparing the new Scaleway environment.
2. Configuring the production server through Laravel Forge.
3. Migrating the WordPress application and required data.
4. Configuring the website and domain environment.
5. Verifying the application after migration.
6. Applying security and performance improvements.
7. Creating and deploying the required new pages.
8. Testing the production website after the changes.

This approach reduced the risk of treating the migration as a one-off hosting move and instead established a more maintainable deployment environment for future work.

Results#

The project delivered a more reliable foundation for the Henceforward website.
